The Lands of Resilience
(EN) A journey through all the regions of Italy and its villages. Commissioned by the Touring Club Italiano with the aim of documenting hundreds of resilient communities in the Italian hinterland united by the national territory enhancement program "Borghi Bandiere Arancioni" (Orange Flag Villages) promoted by TCI.
(ENG) We wondered what Italy was beyond the catastrophic depictions that national and international media tend to give of our country. Beyond these representations, there actually exists a resilient Italy in relation to the often excessively dramatized and sensationalized problems. Another Italy, capable of withstanding the epochal changes of the present, innovating, and envisioning development trajectories projected into the future.
In a journey that traversed the entire peninsula, all the way to Sicily, we encountered resilient excellence in the inland villages: dozens of people and businesses that have chosen to withstand the challenges imposed by contemporary changes and reinvent themselves, often by reclaiming traditional knowledge that the economic boom and industrialization seemed to have buried forever.
This resulted in a surprising number of professional and cultural successes, driven by radical choices that proved to be successful, although often very challenging on a family and personal level. All of this has contributed to the revival of these places that in the past faced enormous difficulties and socio-economic fractures.
With this project, we want to showcase a usually hidden Italy or one relegated to tourist columns, a country capable of critically rethinking itself, achieving excellent goals both economically and in terms of cohesion. An Italy beyond, indeed.
(ITA) Ci siamo chiesti quale fosse l’Italia al di là delle figurazioni catastrofiche che i media nazionali ed internazionali tendono a dare del nostro paese. Al di là di queste rappresentazione, in realtà, esiste un’Italia resiliente rispetto ai problemi spesso eccessivamente drammatizzati e spettacolarizzati.
Un’altra Italia, che è capace di resistere ai cambiamenti epocali del presente, di innovare e di immaginare traiettorie di sviluppo proiettate nel futuro. In un viaggio che ha attraversato tutta la penisola, fino alla Sicilia, abbiamo incontrato nei borghi dell’entroterra diverse eccellenze resilienti: decine di persone ed imprese che hanno deciso di resistere alla prova dei cambiamenti imposti dalla contemporaneità e reinventarsi, spesso recuperando saperi tradizionali che il boom economico e l’industrializzazione sembravano avere sepolto per sempre.
Ne è emerso un sorprendente numero di successi professionali e culturali, determinati da scelte radicali che sono risultate vincenti, sebbene spesso molto difficili sul piano familiare e personale. Tutto questo ha contribuito alla rifioritura di questi luoghi che in passato hanno attraversato enormi difficoltà e incrinature del tessuto socio-economico. Con questo progetto vogliamo mostrare un’Italia solitamente nascosta o relegata alle rubriche turistiche, un paese che è in grado di ripensarsi criticamente, raggiungendo dei traguardi eccellenti sia sul piano economico che della coesione. Un’Italia oltre, appunto.
